MARKETING PUSH TO SUPPORT TOM CLANCY’S H.A.W.X™ AIR COMBAT VIDEOGAME
LOVEFiLM.com, the UK’s largest online DVD & games rental service and entertainment website has launched a multi-faceted marketing drive to celebrate the release of Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X™ on Xbox 360™, PC and PLAYSTATION®3 – completing a trio of successful gaming partnerships with developer Ubisoft®.
Building upon 2008’s successful marketing push for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Vegas 2, and a previous campaign for Assassin’s Creed™ the unique campaign will see H.A.W.X promoted across the LOVEFiLM customer base through offline and online channels.
The activity sees widespread promotion through the distribution of exclusively branded DVD envelopes direct to the homes of LOVEFiLM customers as well as in-depth editorial content via a bespoke flash mini-site where users can vote for their favourites in aviation, from top movie pilots to weapons.
In a first for LOVEFiLM, online content will also include a viral H.A.W.X name generator, enabling game fans to create their very own combat pilot nicknames and further enriching their experience within the promotion.
Launched alongside this, Ubisoft is offering a competition which will give fans the opportunity to win a once in a lifetime jet flight experience in France as well as a host of additional prizes.
Dionne Georgiou, Media Sales Manager for LOVEFiLM said;
“As LOVEFiLM continues to strengthen its position within the gaming industry, we’re thrilled to be working once more with Ubisoft on such an exciting game. The experiential focus of the campaign ensures users engage and have fun, creating an innovative and memorable experience for visitors to the site and game fans alike.”
Phil Brannelly, Senior Brand Manager at Ubisoft commented;
“We’re glad to be working with LOVEFiLM again for the launch of H.A.W.X. We have already enjoyed success with Assassins Creed and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and are excited about this campaign which delivers such an immersive and interactive preview of this high-octane title.”
The Deal was brokered by Dionne Georgiou at LOVEFiLM and Dan Parkinson at Maxus.

In the eighth annual listing, LOVEFiLM stormed into second position with sales growth of 239 per cent per year from its previous position at number five, in the list which measures the sales growth of Britain’s fastest-growing private technology, telecoms and digital media companies over the last three financial years.

London, April 16th, 2008 - LOVEFiLM International announced that its acquisition of Amazon Europe’s DVD rental business in the United Kingdom and Germany was cleared for completion by the regulators yesterday. Lovefilm and Amazon Europe intend to complete the acquisition shortly.
“We are looking forward to officially welcoming customers from Amazon in the United Kingdom and Germany to LOVEFiLM,” said Simon Calver, CEO of LOVEFiLM International. “LOVEFiLM offers one of the largest selections of films in Europe, and we can’t wait to provide these customers with our best possible home entertainment experience.”
As a result of the deal Amazon’s DVD rental customers in the UK and Germany will become members of LOVEFiLM which, for no extra cost, has given them access to Europe’s biggest film community. LOVEFiLM users can choose from more titles (65,000+), including video games, an award winning film download service, interactive film reviews, DVD retail and more - meaning far greater control, choice and value for money than any digital TV movie package or high street video store.
Simon Calver commented, “LOVEFiLM.com has become a destination site for almost anything to do with film. We are an integral part of our customers’ home entertainment mix, as people are realising that they can affordably and conveniently select the films they want to watch - when they want to watch them.”
Amazon Europe will make a cash investment into LOVEFiLM, becoming its largest shareholder. In addition, Amazon Europe will continue to operate the DVD rental business on behalf of LOVEFiLM for approximately three months to ensure an efficient transition and smooth customer experience. No staff reductions are planned at Amazon’s German or UK operations as a result of this business transfer.

LOVEFiLM, Europe’s leading online DVD rental service and digital entertainment portal has held its very first Hackathon - a cutting edge and dedicated way to brainstorm and develop new ideas. LOVEFiLM’s Hackathon, held at their Head Office in London, was planned as a means to accelerate innovation, develop new ways to improve customer experience, reinforce LOVEFiLM.com’s position as employer-of-choice for Perl developers and retain LOVEFiLM’s position as the industry leader.
The concept was pioneered in the Silicon Valley and is used by leading internet companies such as Facebook. In an entire day dedicated to collaborative creativity, participants were invited to generate ideas and design or build anything they wanted, with no restrictions. The goal was to produce something pioneering and beneficial for LOVEFiLM users.
The invitation to take part was open to everyone across the business and, while most of the participants were Perl programmers, contributions were made from all areas, even customer service.
Each idea was named and presented by its creator to a special ‘judges’ panel’, drawn from the highest levels of the business. Concepts included ‘Project Mayhem’, ‘LOVEtext’, ‘Mobi-list’, and a ‘Website Minotaur’, covering such areas as new mobile features, search additions and new browsing technologies. With ideas born at the Hackathon in development now, LOVEFiLM hopes to reveal some of their innovative new improvements early in 2008.
Laurence Morris, Senior Developer at LOVEFiLM.com, who attended the Hackathon comments: “Taking part in a day focused entirely on developing new ideas, with no reign on how or what was produced, was a mind-opening experience and hugely rewarding - not to mention fun. Not only is it evidence of LOVEFiLM’s commitment to staying leading edge, it gave everyone the opportunity to make a genuine contribution and identify something that could make a real difference to the company and our customers”.
William Reeve, Chief Operating Officer for LOVEFiLM comments; “Hackathons have been gaining popularity in the US but are almost unheard of in the UK. At LOVEFiLM we pride ourselves on introducing new and exciting concepts to develop our success and continually raise the bar. We place huge importance on pioneering and trialling new ideas and encouraging creative input from all of our team. A Hackathon gives everyone an opportunity to step outside the box and work on something with immediate impact on the business and its half-a-million-strong subscriber base.”
LOVEFiLM is operating in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany and with its rapid expansion is on the lookout for new members of the software development team.
